I fighter who multicalsses into the weapon master (sword and fist 3.0) If he does it right with a weapon of 19-20 threat range he can get it all the way 15-20. And by then he could increase his multiplier like 3 times per day and due max damage on his regualar attacks like 8 times per day. If you do this I would suggest taking the exotic weapon profiency and get a mecurial greatsword. 2d6 19-20*3 the enchant it with a burst enchantment and take the improved critical feat. You are noe the ultimate tank.
And awesome prestige im playing right now is an ex-monk, rogue, invisible blade. I get the ac benefits of the monk, and blade plus my dex. Its a fun character I think. lots of skill points and lots of opportunities for sneak attacks thanks to the uncanny fient abbility

Psion with Astral Construct.
Alternately (at that level at least) 8th level sorcerer+any melee class. extended mage armor, Polymorph to a war troll, and go for it. If you go straight sorcerer you can get shapechange and really do some damage.
Straight melee isn't bad, but its got to be part of a package. ie, you have to be supporting someone who can really dish out damage while you keep the bad guys at bay. If you are counting on a straight melee character to be the main damage dealer in a party, you'll find out at about 5th level that isn't the proper place for a fighter.
